Fantasy Theory: Plays of > 40 yards

What players (and what type of players) get plays of 40+ yards? If you play in a league that has bonus points for long plays, you may be interested in this.

I grabbed some data from Pro Football Reference from 2016-2018. Surprisingly, Kamara (very explosive player) does not show up in the top 10, with only 2 such plays.

If I take the past three years, these are the guys that had more than 10 plays of over 40 yards in that period (note that JuJu did it in 2 years):

It would appear that if we look at the bigger picture, almost all of these are WRs, and hardly any RB/TE turn up. Indeed in the top-50, there are 6 more RBs (including Zeke and Gurley), and 2 TEs (Kittle and Kelce).

Given that most of the guys above are receivers, I think we also want to look at the Quarterbacks:

A number of these are gunslingers, a number are considered QBs that play it safe. It may be somewhat surprising to find Keenum, Cousins and Carr this high in this list though.

I should add here that Mahomes managed 15 such passes in 2018 (on par with Roethlisberger) and Trubisky had 10. Now there's a surprise.

Travis Etienne 2021 (Jacksonville RB)

Senior out of Clemson, just turned 22; in 2020 got to 1500 yards and 16 TD on 12 games, more than a third of the yards from 48 caught passes (third receiver on his team). Clearly we have a serious RB here who is a prime candidate for the NFL.

Kyle Pitts 2021 (Atlanta)

Kyle Pitts has a huge level of hype surrounding him, but on the other hand, most first round TEs disappoint (to some extent) when they get to the NFL. Let's take a look at the game Florida @ Texas A&M in October 2020 .
